Tourists visiting here for the first time often feel like they've stepped into a fairytale city. The characteristic walls, built in the 12th century, add to the city's charm and create a unique atmosphere.

Located northwest of Madrid, Ávila is the capital of the Spanish province of the same name. It is known primarily for its remarkably well-preserved medieval city walls. Built in the 12th century, these walls create an iconic cityscape that evokes fairytale imagery. The walls rise on sun-drenched plains, adding to the charm of this atmospheric place.

Magical illuminations

The city has preserved its unique character for over a thousand years and is often described as magical. This is due to its charming cobblestone streets, numerous Romanesque and Gothic churches, and the extraordinary night lighting of the walls, which adds to the atmosphere.

A walk along the nearly 1.5-kilometre section of the walls is unforgettable. Spectacular views of the cathedral, Plaza del Mercado Grande, and the city's picturesque surroundings are worth experiencing.

The walls of Ávila are an impressive structure, stretching 2.4 kilometres long with 87 towers and nine gates. Despite their ancient appearance, they are excellently preserved among Spain's most interesting tourist attractions.

The monuments of Saint Teresa

Perhaps one reason the city is considered so charming is its connection to Saint Teresa, a Carmelite mystic whose monuments are visible almost everywhere. They remind visitors of the place's metaphysical dimension.

One traveller on TripAdvisor noted: "The sandcastles and walled cities you build with your children on the beach? In Ávila, they are real." Another tourist who visited Ávila during a trip to Segovia wrote: "Las Murallas de Ávila is an unexpected gift for my wife and me. I didn’t realize there was such a well-preserved medieval walled city in Spain."
