Americans discover $100,000 treasure in Queens Lake with magnet fishing

A pair of Americans have been searching for treasures using the "magnet" method for years. They finally managed to pull a real treasure from the bottom of a lake. "At first, I didn't believe it. We pulled it up and saw huge stacks of money," said James Kane, quoted by the BBC.
Last Friday, James Kane and Barbie Agostini went to the lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in the northern part of Queens, New York. They dipped a fishing rod with a magnet into the water. Suddenly, they felt they had caught something. They were shocked when they pulled out a real treasure.
Treasure at the bottom of the lake
It turned out that a metal box had attached itself to the magnetic rod. The couple quickly realized it was a safe. It was not the first time they found such a vault but the first time with such contents. Inside were bundles of hundred-dollar bills damaged by water.
"At first, I didn't believe it. We pulled it up and saw huge stacks of money," said James Kane, quoted by the BBC.
As reported by the BBC, there were about 100 thousand dollars (over 130 thousand Canadian dollars) in the submerged safe.
Happy finders
Not knowing what to do with the found safe, the Americans took it to the police station. Much to the delight of the finders, the police officers determined that the safe was not connected to any crime and that the couple could enjoy the found fortune. Additionally, no identification documents in the vault could help locate the property's original owner. "Well, I can only congratulate you," said a New York City police officer.
The officer added that he has been in the profession for 18 years but has never encountered a similar situation before.
