Why is the potato effective in cleaning rust?

The potato contains oxalic acid, which, when combined with salt, acts as a natural cleaning agent. This combination effectively dissolves rust, making removing dirt from the metal surface easier. Using a potato to clean baking trays and other metal cookware is an eco-friendly solution and a simple way to extend their lifespan. Scourers often damage protective coatings on baking trays, leading to their corrosion over time. The potato acts gently yet effectively. How to clean baking trays with a potato?

Then, rub it on the rusty areas of the tray, using circular motions. The acid in the potato and the salt will begin to dissolve the rust, and the surface will become increasingly clean.

  1. First, cut the potato in half and sprinkle the cut part with salt, then start rubbing the rusty baking tray.
  2. The potato combined with salt should effectively remove rust. Cut off a thin layer if the potato becomes worn and repeat the process.

After cleaning the tray, rinse it with water and dry thoroughly to prevent rust from reappearing.
